Regenerative Medicine

Healing the body without surgery or harmful meds! The use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and regenerative cell therapy has allowed this to be possible.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

One of the most exciting emerging forms of regenerative medicine for most types of pain is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP injections are an increasingly popular alternative to surgery and are getting great results for patients of all ages. I have been practicing regenerative medicine for 7 years and have helped patients live pain-free. Whether you are an elite athlete, a “Weekend Warrior” or you would like to get your “normal’ function back, if you are looking for a nonsurgical way to manage and eliminate your back, neck, joint or other pain, PRP could be for you.

PRP comes from your own blood, allowing your body to heal itself naturally, eliminating potential harmful adverse effects. PRP contains growth factors to stimulate healing in the body and is the first step to the body initiating a healing response. Unlike using steroids or anti-inflammatory agents, PRP has no harmful side effects.

PRP therapy can be used to treat a variety of acute and chronic injuries, including but not limited to:

  • Chronic lower back pain

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Tennis elbow

  • Rotator cuff tears

  • Knee osteoarthritis

  • Achilles tendinitis

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Neck pain

  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) tears

  • Acute and chronic tendon problems

  • Injuries to ligaments and muscles

Regenerative Cell Therapy

What is stem cell therapy? Stem cell therapy refers to a procedure involving the removal of specialized tissue from the body and isolating the stem cells within the extracted tissue in order to be used for treatment. The extracted stem cells are reintroduced back into the body in areas of degeneration and damage. These cells go to work repairing and replacing the damaged tissue.

There are two commonly available stem cell therapy options:

  • Adipose

  • Bone marrow

While these two forms of therapy are widely known, there is an effective alternative option that one should consider when investigating stem cell therapy. This option is known as regenerative cell therapy.

I prefer to use regenerative cell therapy over stem cell therapy for

several reasons, including:

  • Regenerative cell therapy utilizes powerful mesenchymal cells that help the body repair and regenerates damaged tissue

  • Regenerative cells are harvested from umbilical and amniotic tissue, making them young and potent

  • Immunity has yet to develop in these cells, so there is little to no chance of rejection or an adverse response from your body

Stem Cell Therapies and Why I Prefer Not to Use Them

Adipose Stem Cell Therapy

Is derived from the adipose tissue (or the fat tissue) in the body. This fatty tissue is extracted from the patient’s own body in a procedure similar to liposuction. The extracted fatty tissue then undergoes a process where the stem cells are separated from the other cells in the adipose tissue. These isolated stem cells are then reintroduced back into the patient’s body in areas of damage or degeneration.

Why I don’t perform Adipose stem cell therapy:   Adipose (or fat tissue) collects toxins in the body. I prefer not to use fatty tissue for this reason. In addition, this fat is extracted from your own body. Every tissue in our body can contain stem cells. As we age, our body’s own stem cells age and become less effective at repairing. Using newer, younger healing cells from outside the patient’s body is the preferred method.

Bone Marrow Stem Cell Therapy

Uses stem cells extracted from the patient’s bone marrow. This bone marrow is collected from a drilled hole in either the femur or the pelvic bone. The bone marrow then undergoes a process where the stem cells are extracted. These extracted cells are reintroduced into the patient’s body in areas of tissue degeneration or damage.

Why I don’t perform Bone Marrow stem cell therapy: Bone Marrow stem cell therapy requires the drilling of a hole in either the femur or pelvis to collect bone marrow for stem cell extraction. This is counterproductive in the healing process as the drilling into bone injures the body and opens the patient up to infection. In addition, as stated earlier, your stem cells have aged with your body.

Alternative Treatments to Stem Cell Therapy

Cedar Key Healthcare uses Regenerative Cell therapy as an alternative to stem cell therapy. Regenerative cells are collected from umbilical or amniotic allografts that exist outside the patient’s body. These umbilical tissues are collected at the time of birth by consenting and carefully prescreened mothers. No harm is done to the mother or baby during the collection of this tissue.

Regenerative cells are young, potent cells that have yet to form an immune system. The lack of immunity allows for little to no risk of the body’s rejection.

Regenerative cells can contain:

  • Cytokines

  • Growth factors

  • Proteins

  • Mesenchymal cells
